Husnes Sauna is a self-fired wood sauna positioned directly on the marina at Husnes Båthavn, overlooking the Hardangerfjord on the western shore of Hordaland. The setting is quintessentially Norwegian — a compact wooden cabin at the water’s edge, surrounded by the quiet activity of a small-boat harbour, with the open fjord stretching away toward the mountains of Hardanger. The harbour itself has been voted Norway’s best guest harbour, making this a destination in its own right for those arriving by boat.
Firing It Yourself
What makes Husnes distinctive within the Vestfjord Sauna network is that guests fire the sauna themselves. Upon booking via the Vestfjord Sauna website, guests receive an SMS access code and find firelighters and matches ready at the site. It takes approximately thirty minutes for the cabin to reach its target temperature of 90 °C. There is something uniquely satisfying about this process — building the heat by hand, watching the temperature rise, then stepping into a sauna you have personally prepared.
The Experience
After the heat, plunge or swim in the cold salt water of the Hardangerfjord directly beside the marina, then rinse in the on-site shower. The contrast between the crackling wooden interior and the wide open fjord is particularly powerful at Husnes, with the Hardangerfjord’s scale giving a sense of being suspended between mountain and sky.
Booking
Sessions are priced attractively at NOK 99 (shared) or NOK 499 (private, whole sauna per hour) — the most affordable in the Vestfjord network. Monthly memberships are available for locals. All booking is handled digitally via vestfjordsauna.no, with access code sent by SMS.
